BRINGING THE OCEAN TO HOSPITALISED CHILDREN

MEET THE TEAM

LUCY PENNY

FOUNDER AND OPERATIONS LEAD

Lucy has drawn on her experience of caring for children and her love of the ocean to shape Blue Bubble Immersive (BBI). It has grown from a personal idea into a not for profit to support children’s emotional wellbeing and reconnect them with nature.

Lucy works closely with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, creatives and VR experts. This allows BBI to adapt and strengthen to best benefit hospitalised children, their families, and healthcare staff.

Her vision drives BBI’s mission: to bring the ocean to hospitalised children.

BIO

While training as a children’s nurse Lucy witnessed the emotional challenges faced by young patients, especially those isolated from nature. Inspired by how the ocean nurtures her own wellbeing, Lucy wanted to find a way to share the ocean’s calming properties with hospitalised children.

In 2023, Lucy was awarded the Our World Underwater Scholarship. During this transformative year, the idea for BBI took root: to use virtual reality to share the ocean’s calming power with hospitalised children and nurture the next generation of ocean custodians.

With the support of healthcare professionals, filmmakers and VR experts, Lucy founded Blue Bubble Immersive - an initiative that continues to grow through the support, expertise, generosity and enthusiasm of many wonderful people.

Lucy leads BBI with heart and purpose. Her aim is to help children experience the joy of the ocean — at a time when they need it most.

  • MAE BIO

Mae’s passion for the ocean—and for engaging others with it—was sparked early in life. At the age of 12, she learned to scuba dive with her dad, and from there began carving out a multidisciplinary career. She became a professional diver, earned a BSc in Marine Biology and an MSc in Science Communication, and is now an accomplished storyteller in the field of wildlife film production.

At BBI, Mae plays a central role in developing therapeutic outputs, including immersive virtual reality experiences that support children’s emotional and mental wellbeing. Her early grassroots involvement with BBI has been invaluable in shaping the organisation’s creative foundation. Mae’s collaborative spirit and creative leadership make her an integral part of the team, helping to bring BBI’s vision to life with integrity, depth, and innovation.
