ABOUT

MEET THE TEAM

Hello!
Blue Bubble Immersive is run entirely by volunteers. We’re incredibly grateful for the time, expertise, and enthusiasm shared by so many amazing individuals and organisations. From healthcare professionals and filmmakers to VR specialists and social impact mentors. This collaboration is essential to shape BBI’s mission and impact.

Thank you for helping us bring the ocean to children in hospital.
Lucy and Mae

  • Lucy is a child and adult nursing student who is passionate about reconnecting young people with nature. While caring for children with physical and mental health needs, she witnessed how loneliness and limited access to outdoor spaces affected their wellbeing.

In 2023, Lucy was awarded the prestigious Our World Underwater Scholarship. She spent the year learning from ocean experts, developing her professional dive and medical skills, and exploring the connection between human health and ocean health. During this time an idea took root: to use virtual reality as a tool to offer children a sense of escape and calm, right from their hospital bed.

With the support of filmmakers, healthcare professionals and VR specialists, Lucy founded Blue Bubble Immersive (BBI). A social enterprise using virtual reality to bring the ocean to hospitalised children. The goal: provide therapeutic distraction, increase access to the sea and help inspire the next generation of ocean custodians.

As Operations Lead, Lucy combines clinical insight alongside her love for the sea to lead and grow BBI. She works closely with a multidisciplinary team to co-create immersive, child-centred experiences that support children, their families and the healthcare professionals who care for them.

  • Mae brings vision, creativity and expertise to Blue Bubble Immersive. She has been part of BBI from the beginning and shapes the organisation’s creative foundation.

As Creative Lead, Mae collaborates closely with Lucy and the wider team to develop meaningful, high-quality content that amplifies BBI’s mission. She is directing a documentary on BBI’s journey, produces therapeutic media and creates immersive virtual reality experiences to support children’s emotional and mental wellbeing.

Mae’s passion for the ocean and engaging others with it began early in life. At age 12, she learnt to scuba dive with her dad. That spark has grown into a multidisciplinary career as a professional diver, Marine Biologist (BSc) and Science Communicator (MSc). Today, she is an accomplished storyteller in wildlife film production, using film to connect people with nature.

Mae brings this expertise to BBI, using storytelling to connect children with the ocean even from their hospital beds.

OUR STORY

Imagine this…

A child lies in a hospital bed, anxious and afraid. Then, with a VR headset, they are transported into an underwater world. Dolphins glide by. Clownfish dart among anemones. Kelp forests sway gently in the current. In that moment, fear fades. Replaced by calm, awe and wonder.
