BRINGING THE OCEAN TO HOSPITALISED CHILDREN

ABOUT

MEET THE TEAM

Blue Bubble Immersive is led by a small core team, but made possible by the passion, generosity and expertise of many. From healthcare professionals and filmmakers to VR specialists and supportive organisations, this collaboration is essential to shape BBI’s mission and impact.

Thank you to everyone who has helped bring Blue Bubble Immersive to life. Together, we’re bringing the ocean to hospitalised children to support their wellbeing and inspire the next generation of ocean custodians. We’re excited to see where this journey leads!

  • Lucy is a child and adult nursing student who is passionate about reconnecting young people with nature. While caring for children with physical and mental health needs, she witnessed how loneliness and limited access to outdoor spaces affected their wellbeing.

In 2023, Lucy was awarded the prestigious Our World Underwater Scholarship. She spent the year learning from ocean experts, developing her professional dive and medical skills, and exploring the connection between human health and ocean health. During this time that an idea took root: to use virtual reality as a tool to offer children a sense of escape and calm, right from their hospital bed.

With the support of filmmakers, healthcare professionals and VR specialists, Lucy founded Blue Bubble Immersive (BBI). A social enterprise using virtual reality to bring the ocean to hospitalised children. The goal: provide therapeutic distraction, increase access to the sea and help inspire the next generation of ocean custodians.

As Operations Lead, Lucy combines clinical insight alongside her love for the sea to lead and grow BBI. She works closely with a multidisciplinary team to co-create immersive, child-centred experiences that support children, their families and the healthcare professionals who care for them.

  • Mae brings vision, creativity and expertise to Blue Bubble Immersive. She has been part of BBI from the beginning and shapes the organisation’s creative foundation.

As Creative Lead, Mae collaborates closely with Lucy and the wider team to develop meaningful, high-quality content that amplifies BBI’s mission. She directs a documentary on BBI’s journey, produces therapeutic media and creates immersive virtual reality experiences to support children’s emotional and mental wellbeing.

Mae’s passion for the ocean and engaging others with it began early in life. At age 12, she learnt to scuba dive with her dad. That spark has grown into a multidisciplinary career as a professional diver, Marine Biologist (BSc) and Science Communicator (MSc). Today, she is an accomplished storyteller in wildlife film production, using film to connect people with nature.

Mae brings this expertise to BBI, using storytelling to connect children with the ocean even from their hospital beds.

WHAT WE HAVE BEEN UP TO…

Blue Bubble Immersive needs help to make it grow. We would love more people to get involved!
